How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In order to evaluate this question, I first needed to research the typical male leading roles in crime thrillers.
A good example of this would be the character of John Connolly from the film Black Mass (2015) played by Joel Edgerton. As the narrative is similar to that of my media product it is the perfect example to compare my film opening to. Both my protagonist and the character of John Connolly are white middle aged police officers. I chose Steve to play my protagonist as this is a common look for detectives in crime thrillers as seen by Lieutenant Vincent Hanna from the film Heat (1995) played by Al Pacino. However, in contrast to Al Pacino’s character, could be viewed as submissive as he is the one who is bribed.

For my antagonist I cast my grandfather as I felt that he looked similar to John Goodman in the Gambler. The characters are also very similar as both are the heads of criminal organisations that supply illegal loans and bribes.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

As stated on my target audience analysis survey the audience for my media product would be those who enjoy crime thrillers.

Below is a n interview of me filming my dad on his opinion of my film opening. My dad is 48 years old and a detective for the States of Jersey police.

How did you attract/ address your audience?

To evaluate the way in which I addressed my target audience, I can firstly look back on my target audience survey and interview.

After analysing the results on prezi, it became apparent that the most popular subgenre of thrillers are crime thrillers- this is the reason I chose this genre for my final film.

As stated in the results from the target audience survey, the most common locations in crime thrillers are police stations, such as in the films Se7en (1995) and The Departed (2006). Other common locations includes empty desolate places such as alleyways and car parks such as in Black Mass (2015) and A most violent year (2014)

another expectation that became clear through my target audience research is that characters would wear dark clothing such as Mark Wahlberg’s character in The Gambler (2014). This is why I had my protagonist wear a dark suit to represent the dark mood created within the film opening.
